After graduating from UCLA School of Fine Arts and earning a credential
from Whittier College, I continued to pursue all aspects of the
arts and develop a broad and full appreciation for numerous art
media. This range of pursuits included painting; pen and ink drawing;
printmaking; ceramics; and sculpture. When I was a teacher, I shared
this appreciation and the skills with youngsters of all ages and
helped them develop their own talents and interests. Then, as an
art gallery manager and basket importer, I developed a strong interest
in the art and craft of basket making. I also became a collector
of both Native American and international basketry, but the idea
of making my own basket never occurred to me. Then, I enrolled in
a class in basket making at the Orange County Museum of Art, and
I have been making baskets ever since.
Using my interest in all types of basketry, I am
learning to create and develop my own unique and distinctive style.
With the same natural elements from the native craft, I am striving
to develop interesting designs while maintaining the traditional
utility of the basket. I love to gather and use natural materials
ranging from native California pine needles to gourds of all shapes
and sizes. The natural materials add a life and spirit of their
own that make each basket a unique and individual creation.
